More than 12 million people in the U.S.are suffering from hearing loss, and the number is increasing. Hearing loss—a deterioration in hearing can have a number of different causes, such as exposure to very loud noise, taking certain drugs, Meniere’s disease, stroke, and some hereditary diseases. Hearing loss can be aggravated by genetic tendencies. Pinched nerves in the neck or upper spinal column can impair hearing. Accumulations of fat and mucous in the inner ear can also impair hearing. A buildup of earwax or fluid can also be the culprit. With good nutrition and ear care, it’s often quite possible to prevent hearing loss in the first place, however, if the significant hearing loss has occurred it is still possible to slow down its progression and in some cases reverse it with natural remedies for hearing loss.
Natural remedies to reverse hearing loss
It may be helpful to eliminate foods like fatty meats and dairy products, ice cream, and sugary foods from your diet as a first step to improve your hearing loss.
Cajeput Oil Massage
Cajeput essential oil has an absolutely wonderful stimulating aroma, like a slightly fruity Eucalyptus. The oil seems to combine many of the traits of Tea Tree and Eucalyptus in one. Massaging a few drops of cajeput oil in front and behind the ears helps to improve hearing by increasing circulation.
Ginger Compress Application
Applying a ginger compress over the ears and kidney area helps to break up accumulations of fat and mucous.
Ginkgo biloba for hearing loss
The herb ginkgo has also been shown to be beneficial in improving hearing loss. especially when due to nerve deafness. Ginkgo leaves increase cerebral and peripheral blood flow and improve nerve transmission. This herb may be taken in tea, extract. or capsule form 2 to 3 times daily.
Acupressure for hearing loss
In Oriental medicine, the ears are said to correlate to the kidneys. The kidneys are often treated with acupuncture or moxibustion to help improve the ears. It is interesting that the ears and kidneys are similarly shaped. You can practice acupressure by tapping the ears firmly with two fingertips with the top portion of the ear gently folded over the ear opening, of the other hand 50 to 100 times every day. Also gently tap the sides of the head above the ears. Repeat this way until you feel relaxed and your ear pain subsides. Repeat as needed over a 24-hour period.
Foods that have a long tradition of being considered beneficial to the ears based on their antioxidant properties include colorful fresh fruits and berries (especially blueberries and blue elderberries); adzuki; kidney and black beans.
Green leafy vegetables like kale, collards, and mustard greens; dark yellow vegetables such as pumpkin, acorn, and butternut squashes; garlic; and onions are also beneficial. You can also eat wild violet leaves in salads for strengthening the ears.
An antioxidant vitamin is also helpful in protecting our hearing. A vitamin D deficiency can contribute to hearing loss of the higher frequencies. Taking a supplement of 1,000 IU daily may be helpful.
- Magnesium: 250-500 mg daily.
- Niacin (vitamin B3): 50-1,000 mg daily, in divided doses.
- Vitamin B12: 100-1,000 mcg daily.
- Ginkgo biloba extract: 60 mg, one to three times daily.
Aromatherapy for hearing loss
Several oils benefit circulation, including marjoram, ginger, rosemary, and black pepper. You can combine any of these with a carrier oil to use in a head massage. lf you prefer not to get oil in your hair you can add the oils to a steam inhalation
- Protect your ears from loud noises. If you are outdoors and hear a loud sound such a siren or a train whistle, cover your ears; If you are in a car, roll up the windows.
- Play music at a low to moderate level, and wear earplugs if you must attend a loud concert.
- For those of you who cannot avoid exposure to noises because of your job, invest in earphones that cover your ears. and rest in a quiet place as often as you can.
